LAKE GASTON
Built in 1963 by Virginia Electric Power Company for the production of hydroelectric power, it is situated in two states and five counties of North Carolina and Virginia. Lake Gaston is privately owned by Dominion Power.
One of the truly outstanding lakes on the east coast, Lake Gaston covers an area of approximately 20,000+ acres with “high quality” water. The lake is 34 miles long with over 350 miles of shoreline and as much as one and one half miles in width at its widest point. Constant water levels and mild winters have made its southern location extremely desirable.
Well stocked with game fish the lake is a popular site for many fishing tournaments. Public boat ramps and marinas provide public access for a wide variety of water sports and recreation. Geographically located an equal distance between Interstate 95 and Interstate 85 along NC 903 Highway, Lake Gaston is easily accessible from many of the eastern metropolitan areas.
Residential properties have experienced tremendous increases in value over the last five years and many more property owners are becoming full time residents each year. Several new subdivisions have opened up this year and off water properties are becoming more desirable.
Lake Gaston has experienced a surge of commercial development in the last two years around the existing Food Lion Shopping Center. Essential services are becoming available to local residents at a rapid pace. Limited to one grocery store and a few small shops, a town is now springing up around this new cluster of commercial development.
